‘DEI Hires Refuse To Pay It Forward’: Gutfeld Rips Harris For Not Picking ‘A Gay Man’ As VP Nominee

Fox’s Greg Gutfeld blasted former Vice President Kamala Harris on “The Five” Thursday for reportedly passing over former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as her 2024 running mate because it was “too big of a risk” for a black woman to run with a gay man.

Excerpts from Harris’ new memoir, “107 Days,” have begun to roll out, with The Atlantic reporting Wednesday on her reasoning for not choosing her “first choice.” Fox’s Jesse Watters teed up Gutfeld for his reaction, who replied, “I love this story.” (RELATED: Kayleigh McEnany Derides Kamala Harris For Blaming Biden White House For Bad Reputation)

“I’m so confused. She said she wanted a gay man. Isn’t that why she picked [Democrat Minnesota Gov. Tim] Walz? Look, here’s the deal. I can’t stand people who say they almost did something, but they didn’t because it was hard. And they still expect some credit for almost doing it. It doesn’t count,” Gutfeld said. “The whole point of gaining respect from people is doing the thing that is hard or doing the thing that carries risk. The fact that you almost did it puts us all on the same plane.”

“We almost did it too. I almost picked Mayor Pete, but I didn’t,” Gutfeld added. “Anyway, it’s funny how DEI hires refuse to pay it forward. Imagine if Joe Biden felt the same way about Kamala, that Kamala felt about Mayor Pete. He wouldn’t have picked her. She wouldn’t have been the VP. She wouldn’t have run for president. Then finally she’s running for president. And she’s like, ‘Oh, a gay man? Hell no, I wanna win.’ I’m gonna rely on that old meritocracy thing.”

As reported in The Atlantic, Harris, reflecting on her 2024 presidential run, wrote that Buttigieg “would have been an ideal partner—if I were a straight white man.”

“But we were already asking a lot of America: to accept a woman, a Black woman, a Black woman married to a Jewish man. Part of me wanted to say, ‘Screw it, let’s just do it.’ But knowing what was at stake, it was too big of a risk,” the outlet reported Harris as saying.

Former President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 race and endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. A little over two weeks later, Harris selected Walz as her running mate.

The choice followed speculation that Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly were top contenders, though pundits suggested Shapiro was unlikely to be picked due to being Jewish as there were concerns within the party about appeasing pro-Palestine protesters.

During his 2020 race for president, Biden notoriously announced during the Democratic debates that he would not only appoint the first black woman to the Supreme Court, but he would choose a woman of color as his running mate.

“Secondly, if I’m elected president, my cabinet, my administration will look like the country. And I commit that I will, in fact, appoint a – I’ll pick a woman to be vice president. There are a number of women who are qualified to be president tomorrow. I would pick a woman to be my vice president,” Biden said in 2020.
