In 2020, James Clyburn saved Joe Biden.
The Democratic congressman (and the most prominent black member of the House) swooped in at the final hour to endorse Biden’s campaign ahead of his state’s primary in February 2020. At the time, it looked like Bernie Sanders was running away with the race, as Biden had floundered in the New Hampshire and Iowa primaries. (Subscribe to MR. But Cyburn’s endorsement mobilized the black voters in South Carolina, giving Biden a boost over Bernie to secure the southern state and gain the necessary momentum to ultimately secure the nomination.
On Sunday, before news broke on Biden’s cancer diagnosis, Clyburn tried to do the former president another favor. A big favor. An impossible favor. The lawmaker tried to double down (triple down?) on Biden’s fitness to serve, claiming that Biden could have served until 2029, when he would have been 86, if he had never dropped out and won re-election.
“Do you think that Joe Biden really would have been able to perform as president all the way through January 2029 when he would be 86?” CNN’s Jake Tapper, who is releasing a book about Biden’s cognitive decline May 20, asked the congressman.
Tapper: Do you still believe Biden would’ve been able to perform as president for another four years?
Clyburn: Yes.
Tapper is selling books. Clyburn is still selling The Big Lie.

Cue the unalloyed, cynical gaslighting.
“Yes, I thought that back then. I still think that, but I don’t know that. When people ask me, ‘Did I know this or did I know the other?’ and the fact of the matter is, no, I didn’t. And that’s, you’re making my point here, so it’s not all about age. I’ve seen people develop Alzheimer’s when they’re in their 30s and 40s. So it’s not about age. It’s about the ability to do the job, and I never saw anything that allowed me to think that Joe Biden was not able to do the job,” Clyburn replied.
Of course, we’re supposed to believe that Clyburn saw absolutely nothing out of the ordinary concerning Biden’s mental and physical health. Not the repeated gaffes and slurred speech, nor the slips and falls. Not the mental lapses during his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, nor his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump in 2024. Exclusive: Axios obtained the audio of Robert Hur’s 2023 interviews of Biden which show repeated mental lapses as he struggles to remember words & dates amid long, uncomfortable pauses.

Clyburn stooped so low in his interview with Tapper, it’s almost unbelievable. Had Biden never dropped out, and had he won re-election over Trump, he and the rest of the Democratic Party really would have lied for another four years. They did for one term, and why not run it back?
