Democrat Rep. Jim Himes is complaining about President Donald Trump’s attempt to pay troops during the Schumer shutdown.
A federal government shutdown doesn’t just mean government employees losing their jobs, it also means that troops deployed across the nation and overseas are missing out on their hard-earned paychecks. As politicians fling blame for the shutdown back and forth across the aisle, military families line up at food banks to put something on their tables.
On Saturday, The Hill reported that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was instructed by President Donald Trump to figure out how to route all “available funds” to the unpaid troops, and the department did exactly that.
“I am using my authority, as Commander in Chief, to direct our Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to use all available funds to get our troops paid on October 15th. We have identified funds to do this, and Secretary Hegseth will use them to pay our troops. I will not allow the Democrats to hold our Military, and the entire Security of our Nation hostage with their dangerous government shutdown,” the president announced on Truth Social at the time.
They uncovered “approximately $8 billion of unobligated research development testing and evaluation funds (RDTE) from the prior fiscal year that will be used to issue mid-month paychecks to service members in the event the funding lapse continues past Oct. 15,” according to an official’s statement to the outlet.
But Democrats can’t seem to let Trump do anything without a fuss, even paying the country’s men and women in uniform.
Himes speculated that the move is “probably not” legal, stating that such a move would likely require “legislation.”
“Well, probably not. Again, we just had a little conversation about the White House’s understanding of United States law, which is pretty tentative to say the best,” the congressman said, speaking to CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
“I think to pay the military during a shutdown would require legislation; the Speaker of the House has taken that off the table. So, I mean, is Donald Trump going to say a bunch of stuff? Yes, he’s going to say a bunch of stuff. But I don’t see anything moving.”
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson also made it clear that he would not be holding a standalone vote on any bill for military funding, insisting that Democrats come to the table to pass the full government funding bill that has already passed his House of Representatives.
