The Democratic Party is suffering among American voters, with more than half of them viewing it negatively.
A survey from The Wall Street Journal found that 63% of voters have an unfavorable opinion of the party.
It found that voters disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the economy, inflation and foreign policy, but still trust Republicans over Democrats in Congress to handle the issues.
Only 8% of voters view the Democrats very favorably, and 19% say the same about Republicans.
With tariffs, voters disapprove of Mr. Trump’s policies by 17 points, but trust Republicans more than Democrats to handle the issue by seven points.
Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, talking about the poll in an X post Saturday, said he thinks the disapproval of Democrats comes from the open border and high inflation under the Biden administration. Mr. Trump has tackled both issues successfully.
Mr. Hewitt also mentioned U.S.-Iran peace talks, which went nowhere under then-President Biden versus how Mr. Trump “offered to negotiate seriously.”
“‘Trust the voters’ was Churchill’s constant refrain, which he borrowed from his father. It’s still excellent advice: Trust the voters,” Mr. Hewitt wrote.
Mr. Trump’s approval rating is 46%, which is lower than the disapproval rating of his second term, 52%, but still higher than his approval rating in his first term, 40%.
The only issues in which voters prefer congressional Democrats over Republicans to handle are health care and vaccine policy.
The Journal’s findings are similar to a study conducted by CNN from July 10-13 that found only 28% of voters have a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party, 54% don’t like it, 3% never heard of the party and 16% having no opinion.
The poll surveyed 1,500 registered voters from July 16-20. It had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
