Democrats’ attempt to set up a ‘gotcha’ moment for Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears backfired spectacularly.
In what is being mocked as an epic self-own on social media, the Democratic Party of Virginia called on the Republican gubernatorial candidate to urge members of the Young Republican Federation involved in controversial texts to step down.
The message came ahead of a debate in the state’s attorney general race between incumbent Republican Jason Miyares and Democratic candidate Jay Jones, who has made headlines for all the wrong reasons with his leaked texts about shooting a Republican lawmaker.

While Republicans have condemned the group chat messages, Democrats seem to have planted their feet even more in support of Jones, who has apologized for his texts but remains in the race. Democrat gubernatorial nominee and former Rep. Abigail Spanberger has not called on Jones to step down, a fact that Earle-Sears easily drew attention to in her blistering response on social media.
“Easy, they absolutely must step down,” she wrote. “Now it’s your turn, Abigail.”

Now it’s your turn, Abigail. https://t.co/Fatu6PoJym

The hypocrisy was immediately evident on social media, where many were happy to drop a reality check on Democrats.
“Democrats have refused to condemn this violent rhetoric and refused to call for him to exit the race. On the contrary, Democrats have actually doubled down in support of this candidate,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) wrote in a post on X, noting that “elected Republicans rightfully condemned the alleged vile statements and delivered accountability in the YR organization.”
A reminder for the elected Democrats hyperventilating about this latest @politico hit piece where elected Republicans rightfully condemned the alleged vile statements and delivered accountability in the YR organization (mind you, these were not even candidates for elected office…

It should be noted that the Young Republicans asked them to resign, but the VA Dems did not ask Jay Jones pic.twitter.com/SUeCMnhNJx

Social media erupted at the mic drop response, with many wondering how Democrats continue to fail so badly.
Many reasons to distrust Virginia Democrats, but the stupidity of falling head first into this trap should be disqualifying on its own. https://t.co/lhPifIoi9c

I cannot stop laughing at how the @vademocrats boxed themselves into a corner with this one.
Talk about an unforced error.
