Democrats spewed venom after President Donald J. Trump’s surprise Friday announcement that he was commuting the sentence of former GOP congressman George Santos, who was serving a seven-year prison term for fraud charges.
The controversial ex-lawmaker was expelled from the House of Representatives in 2023 and pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft in August 2024. He was sentenced to 87 months behind bars and ordered to pay restitution to his victims in April.
Now he is a free man. Santos walked out of the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, NJ, at about 11 p.m. on Friday, hours after Trump announced that he had commuted his sentence in a post to Truth Social.

“George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” the president said, slamming Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who lied about his Vietnam service, a greater fraud than anything that Santos committed.
“This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN! George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!” Trump wrote.
The news that Santos was freed set off deafening caterwauling from Democrats, who took to X to vent their spleens.

But he can’t be bothered to address the Republican healthcare crisis crushing working class Americans,” wrote House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), once again pimping the big lie that the “Schumer shutdown” is about saving healthcare for regular Americans and not giving it to illegal aliens, the real reason.

Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) squawked that it was “naked corruption,” an ironic remark from a member of a party that now functions like an organized crime syndicate.
George Santos pleaded guilty to identity theft and wire fraud, a small part of his lying and stealing that really hurt people.
Trump says it plainly: crimes don’t count if you “vote Republican.”

While the perpetually unhinged were pouring out their emotions, Republicans cheered the good news.

“President Trump COMMUTED George Santos’ sentence,” wrote conservative activist Scott Presler. “It was a Witch Hunt from the very beginning & criminals — that have committed violent crimes — haven’t received the 7-year sentence that he did. Welcome back, George.”

Trump’s clemency order also seems to prohibit any “further fines, restitution, probation, supervised release, or other conditions,” according to a picture posted by Justice Department pardon attorney Ed Martin.

“Thank you, Mr. President for making clemency great again,” Martin said.
“I started to think about George when the subject of Democrat Senator Richard ‘Da Nang Dick’ Blumenthal came up again. As everyone remembers, ‘Da Nang’ stated for almost twenty years that he was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having endured the worst of the War, watching the Wounded and Dead as he raced up the hills and down the valleys, blood streaming from his face. He was ‘a Great Hero,’ he would leak to any and all who would listen — And then it happened! He was a COMPLETE AND TOTAL FRAUD,” Trump wrote, explaining that Blumenthal was the inspiration for granting Clemency to Santos.
“He never went to Vietnam, he never saw Vietnam, he never experienced the Battles there, or anywhere else. His War Hero status, and even minimal service in our Military, was totally and completely MADE UP,” he added. “This is far worse than what George Santos did…”
