During his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump called on members of Congress to publicly show their support for what he described as the government’s core responsibility.
“If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support,” Trump said.
He then stated, “The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

The request prompted a visible divide in the chamber, as some lawmakers stood while Democratic members remained seated.
Lora Ries commented on the exchange, focusing on the reaction inside the room.
“So much of the State of the Union is whether one side is going to stand up or remain seated,” Ries said. “Are they going to clap? Are they going to respond?”
She described Trump’s appeal to lawmakers.

“He said, please stand if you agree with the following statement is that your number one duty to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” Ries said.
Ries pointed to the Democratic response.
“And the Democrats didn’t stand,” she said. “They remain seated, telling and showing America that they don’t view American citizens as their number one priority.”
She added, “They put illegal aliens at the same level as American citizens.”
Ries continued, “They view illegal aliens as their constituents, and that’s just absolutely wrong.”
She then questioned the motive behind that stance.
“But why do they do it?” Ries asked. “It’s to hang on to political power.”
Ries argued that immigration policy is tied to political calculations.
“They have built their political House of Cards on mass illegal immigration,” she said.
She added that Democrats “depend on votes.”
“They depend on ballot harvesting in the name of illegal aliens,” Ries said.
She also cited census data.
“And they depend on the head count in the census of those illegal aliens and other non citizens for their very congressional district seats and for Electoral College votes,” she said.
Ries concluded with a call for legislative action.
“And it needs to end,” she said. “And we need to pass the SAVE AMERICA Act.”
