Gregory Zecca became part of the Chapman family in 2021 following the marriage of his mother, Francie, to Duane Chapman. Both Francie and Duane had previously lost their spouses.
In a 2023 interview with the Naples Daily News, Francie reflected on their relationship, saying, “It was God using us to change people’s lives. It was this love story that God brought us together.”
Duane Chapman was previously married to Beth Chapman, who co-starred with him on the reality television show Dog the Bounty Hunter. Beth passed away in 2019 after a battle with metastatic throat cancer.
The couple had been based in Hawaii, where they ran their bounty-hunting business and filmed the show for A&E.
Chapman’s stepson Gregory has worked with the family’s bounty-hunting team, alongside Duane’s daughter, Lyssa Chapman, from a prior marriage.
In a public statement released by the family following the shooting, they said:
“We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony.”
The family also requested privacy during this difficult time.
Duane Chapman gained national fame in the early 2000s after appearing on the A&E series Take This Job. His background as a former convicted drug dealer and murderer, combined with his work in fugitive recovery, drew strong interest from viewers.
Chapman has spoken openly about how his time in prison helped shape his later career.
“While I was in prison, I became the warden’s barber, so that means all the guards were my friends,” Chapman told Fox News. “
One guy went to break and run one day, an inmate, and I jumped him and just — the guards were going to shoot him in the back. And as the guard walked up when I was on top of the inmate apprehending him, and he threw down the handcuffs and said, ‘Hook him up, bounty hunter.’ … That is what started the career.”
The original Dog the Bounty Hunter series aired from 2004 to 2012, followed by several spinoffs that continued through 2019. Chapman, now 72, is the father of 13 biological children in addition to his blended family.
The investigation into Saturday’s shooting continues.
