President Donald Trump has issued a deadline to Russian President Vladimir Putin, giving him up to two weeks to demonstrate genuine intentions to end the war in Ukraine, following a breakdown in expected ceasefire discussions, as reported by the New York Post.

Speaking from the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Trump told reporters, “We’re going to find out whether or not he’s tapping us along or not, and if he is, we’ll respond a little bit differently, but it will take about a week and a half to two weeks.”

When asked if he believed Putin wanted peace, Trump responded, “I can’t tell you that, but I’ll let you know in about two weeks.”

The remarks follow reports that Putin has no current plans to speak again with Trump, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. Meanwhile, Russian forces advanced further in Ukraine, capturing three additional villages in the eastern region on Thursday.

President Trump previously held a two-hour phone call with Putin last week, after which he believed progress had been made toward initiating a ceasefire.

However, Russia soon launched a new round of missile and drone attacks, prompting Trump to accuse Putin of reneging on the talks and escalating the conflict.

“When I see rockets being shot into cities, that’s no good. We aren’t going to allow it,” Trump said. Expressing frustration, he added that Putin was “playing with fire” and had “gone absolutely CRAZY” in his approach to the ongoing war.

Putin had indicated earlier that he was open to working with Ukraine on a memorandum to outline a ceasefire agreement. The Kremlin stated that it is in the process of drafting the document, but has offered no timeline for when it will be ready.

Ukraine, however, voiced skepticism about Russia’s delay in sharing the memorandum, interpreting it as an indication that Moscow may be stalling the process with unreasonable demands.

President Trump has made it clear that the U.S. will reassess its approach if there is no meaningful progress from Moscow within the two-week timeframe.
