Starmer’s spokesman said this morning that he does not recognise the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s claims of “commitments” over the Chinese mega-embassy. He told hacks at lobby briefing:
“We do not recognise any claims of assurances, and I can’t explain the statement they’ve set out, I wouldn’t be able to speak on behalf of the Chinese embassy.”
That is despite Starmer directly raising the mega-embassy with Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro last November. Starmer said to Xi:
“You raised the Chinese embassy building in London when we spoke on the telephone. We have since taken action by calling in that application. Now we have to follow the legal process and timeline.”
