Downing Street has doubled down on denying the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s claims of “commitments” over the Chinese mega-embassy, despite Starmer directly telling Xi Jinping last November that he had “taken action” on it. Starmer’s spokesman said this morning:
“No such assurance could have been made. We do not recognise Chinese claims of assurances.”
Downing Street subsequently failed to deny that National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell discussed the Chinese spies trial with officials during a Whitehall meeting in September. The PM’s spokesman said: “the National Security Adviser routinely discusses matters of national security as you’d expect.” Downing Street is still insisting that there was no political interference or direction in this case, and that the government has a “longstanding policy of not commenting on the nature of meetings regarding national security”. Questions aren’t going away over this…
