Downing Street Fails to Rule Out Wealth Tax
Downing Street has refused to rule out a wealth tax. Asked repeatedly at the morning briefing of Lobby journalists Starmer’s spokesman would only say:
“We have repeatedly said those with the broadest shoulders carry the greatest burden and the choices we have made reflect that. … We are committed that the wealthiest in our society pay their fair share in tax.“
No10 pointed out that Reeves had opposed a wealth tax in the past – why not rule it out then – but added it “cannot comment on future tax policy.” A cautious Downing Street is keeping its options open ahead of punishing budgets later this parliament.
