Downing Street has suggested that housing asylum seekers in army barracks and other unspecified accommodation may actually cost the taxpayer more than asylum hotels. Asked about defence minister Luke Pollard’s words this morning suggesting Labour’s new plan might actually be more costly, Starmer’s spokesman said:
“Costs will vary site by site. Our priority is security and fairness. This is an issue of public confidence over [asylum seekers] being housed in luxury accomodation.”
