Driver Crashes Minivan Into Crowd at Harrisburg Festival, Child Critically Injured [WATCH]

Three people, including a child, were injured Monday evening when the driver of a red minivan drove into a crowd during the closing moments of the Kipona festival in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, according to police and local reports.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as the three-day festival was ending.

The Harrisburg Bureau of Police told a local ABC station that the driver of the minivan bypassed parked vehicles and barricades before striking festivalgoers gathered near the event site.

Authorities confirmed that a child and two adults were injured in the crash.

Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams said the child, a 7-year-old boy, was in critical condition as a result of the collision.

The two adults were identified as a city employee and a woman in a wheelchair, though their conditions were not immediately available.

The Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office told the station that the driver of the minivan was taken into custody following the incident.

Local station FOX 43 reported that police were not initially aware of any life-threatening injuries.

The conflicting updates on the conditions of the victims came as investigators continued to gather details.

Police said the area was in the process of being cleared just before the crash, as the festival had officially ended.

Vendors were also packing up their booths along the street where the minivan entered and struck the crowd.

The chaotic scene left bystanders shaken.

The Anna Rose Bakery & Coffee Shop, which had participated in the festival, said its employees were among those who witnessed the incident firsthand.

In a Facebook post, the business announced it would close the following day in response to the trauma experienced by staff members.

“We will be closed tomorrow on Tuesday, September 2nd,” the post read.

“Members of our staff directly witnessed the tragic accident that happened today at Kipona and need time to process everything. We apologize and appreciate your understanding.”

Law enforcement officials have not released the identity of the driver, and it remains unclear what prompted the individual to drive through the barricades and into the crowd.

Police continued to investigate late Monday as emergency crews responded to the scene.

The Kipona festival, which typically runs over the Labor Day weekend, features food vendors, live entertainment, and activities along the Susquehanna River.

The event had drawn large crowds throughout the weekend, and authorities said that most of the attendees had already begun leaving when the crash occurred.

Officials are expected to provide additional updates as the investigation progresses, including the status of the victims and whether charges will be filed against the driver.
