Hey y’all, welcome back to Unfit to Print.
Earlier this week we tackled the problems with “vetting” the Afghan refugees who came to the U.S. after the 2021 withdrawal.
Today, let’s focus on the Somalis.
GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT
Democrats and the liberal media are very upset that Trump called Somali refugees “garbage.”
“They’ve contributed nothing. The welfare is like 88%,” the president said. “I don’t want ‘em in our country, I’ll be honest with you, okay? Some will say, ‘Oh, that’s not politically correct.’ I don’t care. I don’t want ‘em in our country.”
“We’re going to go the wrong way if we keep bringing in garbage into our country,” he added.
The backlash to his comments is reminiscent of when he correctly identified that some countries are “shitholes.” Or that MS-13 gang members are “animals.”
Some Somali refugees, I assume, are good people. But the recent fraud scandal has laid bare an inconvenient truth: some cultures are simply not compatible with American values.
A large Somali contingent in Minnesota bilked over a billion dollars from taxpayers, running fraud schemes where money meant to feed hungry children or provide health care to autistic kids was used by Somalis to live lavish lifestyles and allegedly, according to City Journal reporting, to send to terrorist groups abroad.
Fifty-nine people have been convicted of crimes so far. All but eight of the 86 people charged in the “meals, housing and autism therapy fraud,” as the New York Times describes it, are of Somali ancestry.
Some of the defendants had also allegedly attempted to bribe jurors into returning a not-guilty verdict and suggested finding them guilty would amount to racism.
Fraud and bribery, of course, are the norm in Somalia. There’s an entire Wikipedia page about it (I’m sure they’ll take it down now that Trump dared to call a spade a spade).
“On Transparency International‘s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index, Somalia scored 9 on a scale from 0 (“highly corrupt”) to 100 (“very clean”). When ranked by score, Somalia ranked 179th among the 180 countries in the Index, where the country ranked first is perceived to have the most honest public sector,” the page explains.
The country has not had a functioning government in decades and is rife with inter-clan wars and human rights abuses. Piracy is common among Somali youth, who view it as a quick and easy way to make money.
It is not advised to travel to Mogadishu without armed security. “Gunfire and random explosions are frequent,” according to Wikitravel. A news cameraman wrote in 2008, “A Westerner going into the ‘Mog’ now is tantamount to suicide.” A Reddit travel thread about Somalia features comments like “There is a list of countries where the govt advises you make sure to have a will and testament sorted before you go. If that is your jam then go ahead. Or if you want to commit to suicide by pirate. I’ve met some good salt of the earth people from there but fuck if I would ever travel there,” and “The US government advises travelers to Somalia have their DNA on file to help identify the body. And a point of contact designated for hostage negotiations.”
An NGO warned earlier this year that “Rape and violence against women and children” is “widespread” in Somalia.
Last year, a Somali immigrant was sentenced to 12 years in prison for abducting and raping a 12-year-old girl. The executive director of a local Islamic center pleaded with authorities to let him out early, writing about his “character” and asserting that he has “faced the challenge of starting over in a new culture” — a new culture that frowns upon raping children, apparently.
A separate Somali rapist managed to avoid jail time for raping a 15-year-old girl at gunpoint and strangling and raping a woman he’d met on Snapchat. He went on just four months later to hold a woman captive at a hotel and rape her repeatedly for days.
Incest is as high as 50% in some parts of Somalia, female genital mutilation is common, child marriage is widespread, and only about 40% of Somali adults are literate.
Is it unreasonable to ask why we are allowing mass refugee resettlement from a country that views these practices as normal? Is it unreasonable to say that people who accept such behavior and bring it to America might be *gasp* garbage?
Nonetheless, Somali refugees have seized outsized power in Minnesota, presumably through their incredibly insular group dynamics. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara learned the hard way what happens when you offend the Somalis. O’Hara described in an interview a scourge of crime being committed by “groups of kids, groups of East African kids that are coming from surrounding communities and not just one community, kind of all over the place.” He was accused of racism and begged for forgiveness: “The Somali community here in Minneapolis has been welcoming and has shown love towards me, and I appreciate it … if people have taken anything that I have said out of context in a way that’s caused harm, I apologize, and I’m sorry for that because that’s not my intention at all.”
Somali-American police officers in Minnesota even recorded a community outreach video where, speaking in Somali, they pledged, “We came to this country as refugees. Now that we’re hired, we work for our own people [Somalis]. Whether in the homeland or here, Somali officers serve you. We know your language, your culture, and we stand with our own people, day and night.”
Trump said the quiet part out loud. We all know it’s true. And that’s why the left is so angry.
