A Baltimore man convicted of violently assaulting two elderly pro-life activists outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in May 2023 received a sentence of one year of home detention and three years of probation, according to court records, as reported by Fox News.
Patrick Brice, 28, was sentenced by Baltimore Circuit Judge Yvette M. Bryant on Thursday, despite the state’s request for a 10-year prison term. Brice was found guilty on two counts of second-degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment in connection with the attack.
The attack left 73-year-old Mark Crosby with a fractured face and temporary blindness, while 84-year-old Richard Schaefer was knocked unconscious.

Video surveillance footage captured the moment Brice shoved 84-year-old Richard Schaefer into a flowerpot, then turned and struck 73-year-old Mark Crosby as he attempted to help his fellow activist.

Crosby sustained serious injuries in the assault, including permanent damage to his right eye.
“This was not a minor altercation between two parties with differing views on abortion,” said Thomas More Society President Tom Brejcha.
“It was a vicious, targeted assault on two senior citizens whose only ‘offense’ was praying for expectant mothers and offering life-affirming alternatives to abortion.”
The judge’s decision sparked immediate criticism from conservative legal and pro-life organizations. “This crime deserves far more serious consequences than a ‘get out of jail free’ card,” Brejcha added.
Brice told the court he initially approached Schaefer to debate “the concept of sin,” but claimed he “snapped” after hearing what he perceived as a racial remark. Before sentencing, Brice apologized in court, saying, “I just snapped one day.”
As part of the sentence, Brice must undergo therapy, attend anger management classes, and submit to drug and alcohol screening.
Crosby’s attorney, Terrell Roberts, read a statement from his client during sentencing. “We were in no position to defend ourselves,” the statement said.
“To treat elderly folks with that kind of brutality is shocking.”
A redacted Baltimore Police Department report indicated multiple witnesses observed the attack. One witness described the exchange as a debate that turned violent without warning.
The report noted that Schaefer was tackled into a large flowerpot before Crosby was punched and knocked to the ground.
Photographs taken after the incident showed Crosby with visible swelling and bleeding on his face. At the time, Baltimore County Right to Life confirmed Crosby was hospitalized due to the injuries he suffered while praying outside the facility.

In a statement on a fundraising page, pro-life organizer Janet Walton wrote:
“For years, Mark has prayed in front of the Planned Parenthood in Baltimore City to let the scared, young abortion-minded women know that they are loved, that their baby is loved.”
The judge has not commented publicly on the rationale for the sentence. Brice will serve his home detention sentence under supervision and must comply with all terms issued by the court.
