Elon Leaves DOGE Role, Trump Hints Continued Involvement Behind Scenes

Elon Musk’s role in the Trump administration is officially coming to an end, but according to President Donald Trump, his influence is expected to remain, as reported by The New York Post.

On Thursday, President Trump announced a press conference to be held at the Oval Office on Friday at 1:30 p.m. EST, marking what he described as Musk’s “last day, but not really” with the administration.

“This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way. Elon is terrific!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Musk’s position was established under the “special government employee” classification, which legally limits his service to 130 days.

He was appointed in January to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created by executive order on Inauguration Day.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X.

“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration’s focus on eliminating waste and inefficiency, stating Thursday:

“The DOGE leaders are each and every member of the President’s Cabinet and the president himself, who is wholeheartedly committed to cutting waste, fraud and abuse from our government.”

According to a May 26 update from DOGE, the department has reported $175 billion in savings since its inception. The savings were achieved through asset sales, contract cancellations, fraud prevention efforts, and other spending reductions.

The total translates to an estimated $1,087 in savings per taxpayer.

Despite the results, Musk’s government role has drawn significant criticism from Democrats on Capitol Hill.

During a February hearing of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) characterized Musk’s influence as “reckless and illegal” and accused Trump of “outsourcing governing to a billionaire who answers to no one.”

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) claimed Musk was functioning as an “unelected official” within the executive branch.

Meanwhile, Musk’s return to the private sector is being met with optimism from investors. Tesla shares climbed 4.2% this week following news of his government departure, according to Bloomberg.

Earlier this month, Musk assured investors that he would refocus his efforts on his companies. “Starting in June, I’ll be allocating far more time to Tesla and SpaceX now that the groundwork at DOGE is in place,” he said on an investor call.

The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
