‘Embarrassing for her:’ Democrats reportedly rage over Kamala Harris’ new ‘gossip’ book

Some Democrats are livid with former Vice President Kamala Harris over her new memoir, Politico reported on Wednesday.

Several individuals active in Democratic politics have been expressing frustration about Harris as the party’s failed 2024 nominee embarks on her media tour promoting her newly released book, “107 Days,” according to Politico. The report comes as Democrats are attempting to escape from the political “wilderness” and move past their party’s steep losses in the 2024 election cycle.

“In an era where Democrats need all hands on deck in the fight to protect the country and the constitution from the lawlessness of the Trump administration, she had a real opportunity to be a critical voice in the resistance,” Michael Hardaway, a Democratic strategist who served as a senior adviser to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, told Politico. “This book seems to be unhelpful and divisive in a way that makes it hard for her to be the face of the party as we look to the future.”

Meanwhile, an anonymous adviser to a prospective 2028 presidential candidate told Politico that Harris “chose to write a gossip book that prioritizes the pettiness of her politics.”

“At a time when people are looking for a vision and leadership … and want to see leaders rise to the level of threat facing the country, it’s pretty crazy she chose to write a gossip book that prioritizes the pettiness of her politics,” the adviser said. “It’s embarrassing for her, and for all Democrats, considering she was the leader of the party less than a year ago.”

In a Tuesday appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Harris expressed regret over the fact that she did not relay concerns to former President Joe Biden about his decision to seek reelection, saying it was “reckless.” When asked about a potential 2028 White House run during an interview with MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” on Monday, Harris said that the upcoming presidential race is not her “focus right now.”

“That’s not my focus right now. That’s not my focus at all, it really isn’t,” the former vice president said.

“If this was intended as a campaign launch, I don’t think it got off the pad,” David Axelrod, former President Barack Obama’s former chief campaign strategist, told Politico. “If it was intended as a catharsis, only she can know if it was successful.”

One anonymous former Biden and Harris campaign staffer told Politico that if voters “start seeing her as a sore loser,” that is “the risk” for Harris politically.

Still, some Democrats are expressing continued support for Harris, according to Politico. Mike Nellis, a Democratic strategist who worked with Harris on her 2020 White House bid, lauded the former vice president for “speak[ing] her truth,” despite “that truth” being “uncomfortable for people,” Politico reported.

“I think if we had had more difficult conversations as a party over the last couple of years,” Nellis told Politico, “we would’ve been in a much stronger position to win the election last year.”

Harris announced in late July that she is not running in California’s upcoming gubernatorial race, spurring rumors that she is planning to launch a White House bid in 2028. However, some recent polling has shown that many California Democrats are unenthused about the prospect of Harris launching another presidential campaign.

On Monday, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten said that Harris has only become less popular among Democrats since she was defeated by President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Trump notably won the popular vote in 2024 — becoming the first Republican nominee to accomplish this feat in 20 years — garnering 49.8% to Harris’ 48.3%.

Harris’ office did not respond to a request for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
