Commentator Vince Coglianese raised questions about the possible public release of FBI investigative files related to Rep. Eric Swalwell and his reported connections to a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, as legal tensions appear to be escalating over the matter.
Coglianese pointed to recent developments involving a letter sent by attorneys for Swalwell to FBI Director Kash Patel, in which they requested that the bureau refrain from releasing investigative materials dating back roughly a decade.
According to Coglianese, the letter warned of potential legal action if the files were made public.

“Are the Fang Fang files about to go public? It certainly seems like it, based on the freak out that Eric Swalwell is undertaking right now. Eric Swalwell is very concerned that you and I are going to get full access to all the files that the US government has on this subject,” Coglianese said.
He described the legal effort as an attempt to block disclosure of records connected to the case, which has been the subject of previous reporting involving allegations of ties between Swalwell and an individual suspected of acting on behalf of Chinese intelligence.
“Attorneys for Representative Eric Swalwell demanded Monday, in a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel that the bureau refrain from releasing old, decade old, one decade old actually investigative files involving the Congressman’s purported ties to a suspected Chinese intelligence operative,” Coglianese said.
Coglianese added that the letter included a request for a prompt response from the FBI, as well as a warning that further steps could be taken if the agency proceeded with releasing the material.

“The Congressman called for the FBI to agree within days not to release the files. Don’t release the files, adding that any further action to release them could prompt him to take legal action,” Coglianese said.
The issue gained additional attention following a report indicating that the FBI may be preparing the files for potential release.
Coglianese referenced reporting that agents had been tasked with reviewing and redacting the documents.
“The cease and desist letter followed a report from The Washington Post over the weekend that Patel had dispatched agents to review and redact the files and potential move to ready them for public release,” Coglianese said.
Coglianese questioned the push to prevent disclosure, arguing that public access to the records would provide clarity about the situation.
“Isn’t the rule on the left. If you have nothing to hide, then just release the files,” Coglianese said.
He also suggested that the contents of the files could include information that Swalwell may not want disclosed publicly.
“Swalwell knows that there are details in these files that are either highly damning or highly embarrassing to him,” Coglianese said.
Coglianese continued by offering a critical assessment of the situation, asserting that the case raises concerns about potential vulnerability to foreign influence.
“What does embarrassing mean, that he’s a complete sucker, he’s a rube, that the signs were everywhere. What woman sees Eric Swalwell and thinks to himself, yeah, I need a piece of that only if you’re in the Chinese Communist Party and you want to make him the idiotic mark that you take advantage of,” Coglianese said.
He concluded by stating that the effort to block release of the files reflects concern about what they may contain.
“That’s what happened here. And Swalwell is worried that all of this laundry is about to be exposed in public,” Coglianese said.
