Failed Trump assassin Ryan Routh’s son sentenced to 7 years for child pornography

The son of the president’s second would-be assassin is on his way to prison after being sentenced for the possession of “horrific and exploitative” child sexual abuse materials.

Since the July 13, 2024, attempt on then-former President Donald Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, other arrests over threats to his safety have been made with limited follow-up details provided to the public. Friday, some justice was served, albeit tangentially, as Ryan Routh’s son, Oran Routh, was sentenced to seven years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Having been arrested in September, days after his father’s armed encounter with law enforcement at Trump’s West Palm Beach, Florida golf club, Routh had pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography of a child under the age of 12 and the other charges, possessing and transporting child pornography, would be dismissed.

At the time of his arrest, investigators were executing a search warrant for a separate incident when they were said to have uncovered “hundreds of child pornography files” on electronic devices in Routh’s possession.

Prosecutors referred to the materials as “horrific and exploitative” as some of the content was said to feature children as young as six years old being sexually abused. Countering the facts of the case, the defense included character letters submitted by Routh’s mother and a former principal.

Referring to them at the time of sentencing, Judge William Osteen, who’d asserted that any punishment less than what he handed down would not satisfy the seriousness of the crime, said that though the remarks were persuasive, “A positive personal history is not a distinguishing factor.”

Osteen had also referenced the convict’s activity in messaging people promoting and participating in child sex abuse when he made his decision that, in addition to the seven years behind bars, would be five years of supervised probation and a restitution order to pay the victims in monthly installments beginning 60 days after his release.

“I think what I’m pleased with is Judge Osteen gave the case good consideration on that, and while we may have wanted a different result, we’re satisfied the court gave considerable thought to sentencing,” said Routh’s attorney John Coalter

The sentence came only a few weeks after Tina Cooper had pleaded guilty to firearms trafficking and Ronnie Oxendine had owned up to possession of an unregistered firearm after prosecutors had indicated the pair had conspired to sell a rifle to Ryan Routh in August 2024, ahead of his alleged attempt on the president’s life.

As for the alleged would-be assassin, he had pleaded not guilty in September. In April, the DOJ claimed he sought to obtain a rocket launcher, allegedly to target the president’s plane. The familial connection found Coalter seeking an expedited transfer from county jail as he told WGHP, “Because of his father’s case as much as anything … there’s always a safety concern. And the sooner that he can get to the Bureau of Prisons, that has a little more experience in dealing with this, the better.”
