A Los Angeles Lakers fan reportedly sued LeBron James on Wednesday, claiming he spent hundreds of dollars on game tickets because he thought the star would be announcing his retirement.
TMZ reported that Andrew Garcia filed legal documents in small claims court in Los Angeles alleging James duped him. He told TMZ he spent the money after the NBA star took to social media Monday, publicly teasing that he had a big decision to make. Garcia claimed he believed James was alluding to his retirement from professional basketball, so he rushed to Ticketmaster and spent $865.66 on tickets to what he thought would be James’ last game against the Cleveland Cavaliers — only to discover that James was teasing a collaboration with Hennessy.
The advertising campaign dubbed “The Second Decision” was unveiled Tuesday, much to Garcia’s alleged dismay.
By the time the advertising campaign was announced, Garcia claimed he had already spent $432.83 each for two tickets for the March 31, 2026 match up — tickets that he alleged have lost nearly all their value since.
Garcia’s legal documents claimed James owed him for “fraud, deception, misrepresentation, and any and all basis of legal recovery.”
“I wouldn’t have purchased it if he wasn’t going to retire. Plain and simple,” Garcia told TMZ. (RELATED: Todd Nepola, Estranged Husband Of ‘Real Housewives’ Star Alexia Nepola, Sues Major Networks For $11 Million)
James faced widespread backlash over how the Hennessy ad was rolled out but has not yet issued public comment about the matter.
