Several far-left members of the Democratic Party prioritized celebrating blackness with their own Kwanzaa celebration over Christmas.
Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, and Delia Ramirez of Illinois gathered in the halls of Congress for their own Kwanzaa celebration, dubbing it “Squanzaa.” Former Democratic Missouri Rep. Cori Bush also celebrated. All of them make up “The Squad,” a nickname for a far-left group of Democrats. The holiday is observed during a week-long celebration beginning Dec. 26 and is intended to honor “African heritage and culture,” according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC)
Ramirez is a lifelong United Methodist, Ocasio-Cortez is Catholic, Pressley was raised Baptist, and Omar and Tlaib are both Muslim, according to a Religion News Services report.
Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966. He is a criminal convicted of heinous crimes.
Karenga, who allegedly abused drugs, said at the time that the assault and kidnapping accusations from several women were part of a political ploy.
He created Kwanzaa as a secular, nonreligious pan-African holiday. Its seven principles mirror those of the notorious Symbionese Liberation Army — the radical, bank-robbing group that kidnapped American actress and heiress Patty Hearst in 1974, according to the Department of Justice.
The holiday is marked by 7 days of candle lighting to celebrate the 7 principles of the holiday, which are “unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba) and faith (imani).”
Tlaib promoted the celebration on Instagram, posting a video filmed inside a congressional office. The clip featured a sign showing participants gathered around a kinara — the traditional Kwanzaa candle holder — which displays seven candles, three red, three green, and one black, representing the seven principles of unity, according to NMAAHC.

Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by Marxist professor Maulana Karenga to undermine Christmas, 2 years after Harris was born.

“We had a Squanzaa celebration today to show our love and support for our incredible teams. Our staff show up everyday ready to fight for our communities and they do it with love. Our squad is big and it includes everyone who is justice for all.” (RELATED: ‘Let Us Celebrate’ — Trump Rings In Kwanzaa)
