On New Year’s Eve in 2020, police say a man drove a stolen car while high on methamphetamine, ran a red light, and killed two women: Hanako Abe, 27, and Elizabeth Platt, 60.
The suspect in the case is named Troy McAlister, a career criminal who, for 30 years, had terrorized the city of San Francisco — and gotten away with it.
This wasn’t just a hapless tragedy. It wasn’t a wrong-place-wrong-time accident. It was a tragedy brought on by the insane fecklessness of California and San Francisco’s criminal justice system, deaths that were totally preventable, if only more sane, reasonable, and empathetic people were in charge. Earlier in 2020, left-wing San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin — who was later recalled and booted out of office in 2022 — cut a plea deal to get McAlister released from jail. At the time, McAlister was awaiting trial in a county jail for a robbery he had allegedly committed in 2015. But, thanks to Boudin, he was a free man.
The court transcript from that day is mind-boggling.

“All right. Mr. McAllister, sir, I wish you the best of luck,” Judge Loretta Giorgi said once the plea deal was completed, according to the Voice of San Francisco.
“I’d like to get my ankle monitor off today,” McAlister replied.
“Oh, yes. I’m going to order your ankle monitor removed as well,” Giorgi said.
“I did like a lot of extra time, like maybe a year extra. So, what happens with that credit?” McAlister asked. “Will they take it off my parole?”
“That you’ll have to ask the parole agent about,” Giorgi responded.
What did a free man like McAlister do once he was out of jail? He did what he knows best: commit crime.
Following multiple felony arrests June 28, Aug. 20, Oct. 15, Nov. 6, and Dec. 20, of that year, McAlister only spent a mere 11 days in jail. His parole remained intact, even after these strings of arrests.
Shockingly, his arrest Dec. 20 occurred just 11 days before the tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of Abe and Platt.
And yet, after that last arrest, Boudin never filed any new charges. McAlister’s parole was not revoked. Once again, he was a free man. And once again, San Franciscans paid the price, this time with their lives.
Flash forward to 2025.
SF attorney Scott Grant is arguing that a man w 73 felonies including killing two women should be released without prison tomorrow.
This is the disdain @sfgov has for its citizens and any official silent about it including new mayor @DanielLurie is complicit. https://t.co/QfuPUfJxZD pic.twitter.com/upVOvDBs8s

During a hearing Tuesday, McAlister’s attorney, public defender Scott Grant, argued that his client would have been better suited for rehabilitation rather than incarceration. Earlier in October, he filed a request to have McAlister placed into an addiction recovery program rather than face traditional criminal prosecution.
Thankfully, San Francisco Superior Court judge Michael Begert denied it Tuesday.
“Your actions, in combination with some incredibly bad luck, have resulted in two people losing their lives. I don’t know if you are ever going to be able to get over the fact that you are responsible for that. I think the way forward, as I see it, is for you to face your community through the criminal justice system and take accountability,” Begert told McAlister.
Grant said that he will be filing a motion to dismiss some of the charges in the case. McAlister has pleaded not guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter and other offenses, including driving under the influence of drugs.
McAlister is due in court Nov. 15 for a hearing to set his jury trial.
Contrast McAlister’s absurdly prolonged case with that of David DePape, who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, in October 2022.
DePape had devised a plan to abduct Nancy Pelosi in an effort to expose what he perceived as a vast government conspiracy. In her absence, he attacked Paul, fracturing his skull and inflicting severe injuries on his arms and legs.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 31: San Francisco district attorney Brooke Jenkins speaks during a news conference on October 31, 2022 in San Francisco, California. Jenkins announced state level charges against David Wayne DePape who attacked Paul Pelosi, husband of U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, after breaking into their home. DePape is being charged with attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder and threats to a public official and their family. The U.S. attorney has also filed federal charges against DePape. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)
DePape was convicted of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assaulting a relative of a public official. For these federal crimes, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison in May 2024, less than two years after the assault.
In October 2024, following a conviction on his state charges that included aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and threats against an elected official or their family, DePape was sentenced to life behind bars, in addition to the 30 years.
Let that sink in for a moment.
If you are mentally ill and attack the husband of a prominent San Francisco Democrat, you get the book thrown at you (rightfully so), and your case chugs along and finishes in two years.
But if you are a potentially mentally ill repeat felon and allegedly kill two innocent women (who don’t have the surname “Pelosi”) in a hit-and-run, a left-wing justice system bends over backward to keep you out of prison. In the name of “social justice,” your case drags on and on and on to shield you from accountability.
Plain and simple, this is a travesty of justice. The city of San Francisco and, above all, Hanako Abe, Elizabeth Platt, and their family and loved ones, deserve better.
