As President Ronald Reagan said in his first inaugural address, the United States is the “last and greatest bastion of freedom.” That reality failed to sink in for a Texas family that moved to a town outside Moscow, Russia, to escape “woke ideology,” only to find the 46-year-old head of the household, Derek Huffman, sold a story about service in the military that seemingly had him headed for the front lines instead.

Earlier this year, the father of six, who left behind his three adult sons, relocated with his wife and their three young daughters and a Husky to a rural village planned to entice Americans seeking refuge from “liberal gender norms.” According to United24Media, only two families had thus far relocated to the community begun by blogger Tim Kirby, including the Huffman’s who called it a “fresh start in a country that respects family values.”

In a video that has been removed from the channel chronicling the family’s experiences since moving to Russia, wife DeAnna Huffman lamented having yet to see a paycheck come in after weeks of service, detailing how her husband had been misled into believing his military service would be as a war correspondent, only to instead find himself jockeying for a position as a welder getting increasingly closer to the battlefield.

“When he signed up and had all of that done, he was told he would not be training for two weeks and going straight to the front lines. But it seems as though he is getting one more week of training, closer to the front lines, and then they are going to put him on the front lines,” she said while recounting the difficulties of training without a full grasp of the language, arguing her husband had been “thrown to the wolves.”

Meanwhile, the video series on YouTube included a Father’s Day video message from Huffman in a camouflage uniform expressing, “I miss you all more than you can imagine, and I can’t wait to see you. Hopefully, I get a vacation at some point and I get to come home and spend a couple of weeks with you.”

“But man, you’re on my mind 24/7, and just know that what I’m doing is important to me and important for our family, and I will do whatever it takes to be safe and to come home to you. And take care of each other,” the father said before adding with compliments to his wife, “Take care of mom.”

The most recent update from DeAnna on July 15 indicated her husband is “doing fine. He is alive and safe and just counting down the days,” until his service is completed.
