The Democrat Party is giving Sen. John Fetterman a taste of what it’s like to defy their narrative.
Fetterman has notably distanced himself from his own party on a multitude of key issues, including Israel, border security and his willingness to work with President Donald Trump. These things have made him a target for not only party acolytes but also the mainstream media outlets that support them. Perhaps this is why so many sources like New York Magazine and Associated Press are running what the senator has described as “hit pieces” on him recently.
As BizPac Review previously reported, Fetterman’s support among Democrats has tanked according to a poll taken in February.
“Just under half — 49% — of likely Democratic voters in Pittsburgh, near where Fetterman lives, said they have an unfavorable impression of the senator, while 46% said their impression of him was favorable, according to the poll. By contrast, the state’s Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro was seen as favorable by 82% of the same set of voters and unfavorable by just 13%,” the report reads.
Reports about the senator’s alleged behavior behind the scenes are likely contributing to the negative perception among the likely Democrat voters. An article from New York Magazine claimed that staff members expressed concern about Fetterman’s “erratic” behavior, like an alleged incident where he was found “wandering” around the Capitol grounds.
Other stories, such as months-old footage of him arguing with a pilot and an AP report on an outburst during a union meeting, have surfaced within the last month, prompting many to wonder if it’s part of a smear campaign aimed at helping Democrats primary Fetterman in 2028.
Arguably, the worst of his sins is reaching across the aisle to work with Republicans and be a bipartisan force for progress in politics. He embraced an opportunity to work with recently-elected Sen. Dave McCormick to host joint public events, which prompted protests from upset activist groups. In another instance, he co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act with Sen. Katie Britt (R-Alabama) and even met with some of Trump’s Cabinet picks.
But Fetterman is not the first Democrat to face the wrath of his own party. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, former Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin, and even Sen. Chuck Schumer have all felt the ire of the party machine when they have strayed too far from expected behavior.
It remains to be seen if Fetterman’s political career will be permanently tarnished by the reports or if he will end up switching parties and becoming a Republican.
