Fever’s Sophie Cunningham Clearly Isn’t Excited About WNBA’s Expansion

Sophie Cunningham just became my favorite player in the WNBA.

The WNBA has been prospering off “The Caitlin Clark Effect” ever since she’s gotten to the league, and that’s elevated to a new level as the WNBA recently announced three new expansion franchises that are coming to Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia.

With that being said, Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate and bodyguard, Sophie Cunningham, isn’t a fan of the cities the league chose. And quite frankly, I don’t blame her.

The expansion to the three cities will happen by 2030. Combine those teams with other expansion clubs that were previously announced, Toronto and Portland, and the WNBA will have a total of 18 organizations.

When Cunningham was questioned about it, she kept it a bean about not being thrilled with the new cities. (RELATED: WNBA Adds Three Expansion Franchises, And They Can Thank Caitlin Clark For It)

“I also think you want to listen to your players, too, like, where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans?” said Cunningham.

And here’s where I fell in love with Sophie.

Miami would’ve been a great one, Nashville is an amazing city, Kansas City — amazing opportunity with a huge arena downtown that no one’s using.”

And she closed things out with this gem: “I don’t know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or Cincinnati.”

The fact that she named Miami as the first city for an expansion team, and then proceeded to completely forget about the existence of Cleveland, yeah …

Consider me a new fan of Sophie Cunningham.
