Florida Teacher Put On Leave After Allegedly Forcing Students To Address Her As ‘Mx’ Instead Of ‘Ms’ or ‘Mrs’

A Florida elementary school teacher allegedly forced students and faculty to call her “Mx.” instead of “Ms.” or “Mrs.” in violation of state law.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said Wednesday that a female teacher at Talbot Elementary School in Gainesville violated both Florida law and Alachua County School District policy. He called for immediate action to stop the practice in an X post.

The Alachua County Public Schools placed the teacher on administrative leave while officials investigate the complaint, district spokesperson Jackie Johnson told the Gainesville Sun. Uthmeier sent a letter Oct. 22 to Superintendent Kamela Patton and the school board demanding they enforce the law and consider disciplinary action.

Florida Statute 1000.071 bans K-12 school employees from using personal titles or pronouns that don’t match their sex assigned at birth. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the legislation in July 2023 as part of HB 1069, which requires sex education programs to teach that biological sex is “binary” and “unchangeable.” (RELATED: Corporate Media Outlets Refer To Trans-Identifying Catholic School Shooter By Preferred Pronouns)

“The legislature so declared it the policy of Florida’s public school system that ‘sex is an immutable biological trait and that it is false to ascribe to a person a pronoun that does not correspond to such person’s sex,’” Uthmeier wrote in his letter.

The attorney general warned district officials they could face liability if they fail to act immediately. His Office of Parental Rights received the original complaint about the teacher’s use of the gender-neutral title.

The incident adds to mounting state scrutiny of Alachua County schools. The Florida Department of Education currently monitors school board meetings through year’s end after finding the board violated a parent’s free speech rights in July.
