I was born and brought up in Rugby League country, that is Wigan. We were a very ordinary family, living on a sprawling council estate and attending the local Church of England primary school.
My dad was a Roman Catholic; I cannot recall him ever attending church, but my two sisters and I went to the local Anglican church, often with my mother and aunt. We also went to Sunday school every week.
The only thing I can remember about the Sunday school was sitting in a horseshoe shape and the elderly teacher reading to us from the Anglican prayer book.
