Former democrat governor launches Senate bid for GOP-held seat

Democrats are making their plays in a desperate attempt to claw back control of Congress from the GOP.

Former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper took to X with a video announcing his decision to run for a Republican-held Senate seat. He is aiming to succeed the retiring Sen. Thom Tillis.

Watch:

“I have thought on it and prayed about it, and I have decided: I am running to be the next U.S. Senator from North Carolina,” Cooper posted. He followed up that message with a link to ActBlue, where donations to his campaign could be made.

On his page, it is clear that installing Cooper would be a step toward stonewalling President Donald Trump’s agenda.

“North Carolina’s 2026 election will be the most important Senate election in the nation, and Roy Cooper is the only DEMOCRAT who can win,” it reads. “When Democrats flip North Carolina’s Senate seat, we can take back the Senate and STOP Donald Trump and his Republican enablers in their tracks.”

He is already boasting support from his party’s top names, according to Fox News.

“Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) chair Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said in a statement that ‘Governor Cooper is a formidable candidate who will flip North Carolina’s Senate seat, and his announcement is the latest indication that the Republicans’ Senate majority is at risk in 2026,’” the outlet reported.

X users had a lot to say about Cooper’s bid for the Senate:
