Former FBI Informant Receives Fundraising Emails From a Dead Democrat Representative

A former FBI informant has raised concerns after receiving fundraising emails from the campaign of the late Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) after the congressman’s death.

Kamran Fareedi, who previously worked as a government informant, called the campaign’s posthumous outreach “beyond unethical.”

Connolly, who represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District for over a decade, died earlier this year at the age of 75 following a battle with esophageal cancer.

Despite his passing, Fareedi says he recently received email solicitations under Connolly’s name.

A party run primary process is being held in just 22 days at polling places that still haven’t even been announced.

Walkinshaw, who previously served as Connolly’s Chief of Staff, has been publicly mentioned as Connolly’s preferred successor.

Before his death, Connolly had written a letter to constituents urging them to support Walkinshaw as his replacement.

That message, however, came before the apparent continuation of campaign fundraising under Connolly’s name after his passing.

Rep. Connolly died several weeks after announcing that his cancer had returned. He had been undergoing treatment since 2024.

At the time of his death, Connolly was the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, a role he assumed in January after securing more support than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in a closed-door vote, according to Newser.

Connolly’s passing triggered a vacancy in Virginia’s 11th District and intensified focus on the upcoming Democratic primary to fill the seat.

Walkinshaw has not formally announced his candidacy, but speculation about his campaign has increased following Connolly’s endorsement and the activity surrounding the campaign’s digital outreach infrastructure.

The fundraising emails reportedly received by Fareedi appear to have been generated using automated systems connected to Connolly’s official campaign account.

The incident raises questions about the management of digital campaign assets following the death of a sitting member of Congress, especially when those systems are used to solicit funds or support without a clear living candidate attached.

Campaign finance regulations do not currently address the handling of fundraising communications issued in the name of deceased federal officeholders, and oversight of such systems typically falls to campaign staff and party officials.

It is unclear whether the Federal Election Commission or other oversight bodies will investigate the matter, though the incident has prompted calls for reforms in campaign email and donation practices following a candidate’s death.

The Connolly campaign has not issued a public response to the reports, nor has Walkinshaw commented on the use of the email system.
