Former GOP Rep. Mayra Flores Hospitalized After Announcing Run for Congress

Former Congresswoman Mayra Flores was hospitalized Tuesday, just hours after announcing her campaign to reclaim a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The sudden medical development was confirmed by her campaign in a public statement, which did not disclose the nature of her condition.

Flores, who made history in 2022 as the first Mexico-born woman elected to Congress, declared her intention Tuesday morning to run in Texas’s 28th Congressional District.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar, who was indicted in March on federal bribery and conspiracy charges tied to alleged dealings with foreign interests.

The campaign released a statement Tuesday afternoon asking for support and prayers.

“Former and future Congresswoman Mayra Flores, a devoted conservative fighting corruption in Texas’s 28th District, has been hospitalized,” the campaign stated.

“During this challenging time, we humbly ask for your prayers and support.”

The statement continued, “Mayra’s passion for building a brighter future for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come is at the heart of everything she does. Guided by faith and determination, she remains steadfast in her mission during this critical moment.”

Earlier Tuesday, Flores formally launched her campaign, posting a message on social media in which she expressed her continued commitment to conservative principles and national service.

“I am deeply honored to announce my candidacy for Congress—a chance to serve the people and uphold the values that make our nation great,” she wrote.

“This campaign is driven by a love for our country and a commitment to fight for justice, opportunity, and unity for all.”

Flores asked supporters to contribute to her campaign, calling it “a powerful investment in the future of our community and our nation.”

Flores previously served in Congress after winning a special election in Texas’s 34th District in 2022, flipping a historically Democratic seat.

However, she lost the same seat months later during the general election after redistricting shifted the political boundaries.

Now aiming to unseat Cuellar in the 28th District, Flores enters a race that is likely to draw national attention, particularly in light of Cuellar’s legal issues.

The Democrat was indicted on charges alleging that he and his wife accepted nearly $600,000 in bribes from entities linked to Azerbaijan and a Mexican bank.

In comments made prior to her campaign announcement, Flores criticized the lack of conservative voices in Spanish-language media and emphasized the importance of countering what she described as “misinformation” targeting the Hispanic community.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have that many voices in the Spanish-speaking community… talking to the Spanish-speaking community about the amazing work President Trump is doing,” Flores told Fox News. “And that’s something that I feel I’m obligated to do.”

Flores said her decision to run was not motivated by personal ambition but by what she believes the country needs.

“It’s not about what Mayra Flores wants. It’s what this country needs me to do,” she said.

“This is a seat that can be flipped in 2026. Right now we need a much bigger majority. It makes it very difficult for President Trump to get anything across with such a small majority.”

Flores also criticized Cuellar’s conduct, stating, “Being a member, it’s a position where you can help so many people… And yet he threw it all away. And no amount of money is worth you doing that to your country.”

As of Tuesday evening, no further updates on Flores’s medical status had been released.
