Even a former aide to President Barack Obama couldn’t help but give President Donald Trump kudos for his latest foreign policy move.
Tommy Vietor took to X to share a clip of Trump announcing the “cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness.” While the move doesn’t come without criticism, people from both sides of the political aisle agree that it was the correct move to make.
Look:
Credit to @POTUS — this is a politically fraught decision that is absolutely the right thing to do. Keeping crushing sanctions intended for Assad on the new Syrian government was bound to end in disaster. Removing them now gives the al-Sharaa administration a chance. https://t.co/S3bmwsqXko

When faced with criticism of his choice to applaud the president, the former Obama spokesperson didn’t back down.
People that tweet “do better” might be the most annoying humans on the internet. I don’t care if Syria offers Trump a 747 filled with Captagon. Getting rid of sanctions is the right thing to do. It’s ok to say it. https://t.co/uCNigpwLCx

Others, however, were more than willing to give Trump his due:
Agreed. We need to give this new Syria a chance, and I’m all for making new friends if the relationship is truly mutually beneficial.

A rare good piece of foreign policy to give Syria a chance to grow and reduce extremism in the region.
