Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse, told CBN News he wrote the letter last October after Trump’s comments about eternity went viral.

At the time, the president commented about trying to get to heaven and, at one point, said he “might not be heaven-bound,” as Graham noted.

“This letter was written in October, after President Trump had made a comment to the media — maybe in jest — about not knowing if he would make it to heaven,” the evangelist said. “I wanted him to know what the Bible says and that he could be sure.”

Graham wasn’t done there, explaining the core of the Gospel message.

“It’s not by works, it is through repenting of your sins and putting your faith in God’s Son, Jesus Christ,” he said. “I think it was appropriate that President Trump shared this truth with everyone on Palm Sunday.”

Graham’s letter from October, which was shared by Trump on Palm Sunday, reiterates these sentiments, proclaiming, “The only One who can save us from Hell is Jesus Christ. You can’t save yourself; I can’t save myself.”

The evangelist’s response came after Trump made a number of remarks about heaven last year, proclaiming on Air Force One he was “being a little cute” about the subject. Still, he seemed to be pondering eternity, particularly after he was shot while on the campaign trail in 2024.

“I don’t think there’s anything going to get me in heaven,” Trump said in October. “I really don’t. I think I’m not maybe heaven-bound. I may be in heaven right now, as we fly on Air Force One.”

He continued, “I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.”
