Vice President of the United States JD Vance said widespread fraud and organized resistance to federal immigration enforcement are driving instability in several Democratic-run states and cities, arguing that a small group of far-left activists are responsible for much of the chaos seen in places like Minneapolis.

Vance made the remarks while discussing recent arrests and enforcement actions, saying the scope of fraud uncovered by the Trump administration demonstrates a broader national problem that extends well beyond Minnesota.

“How many more arrests do we think we’re going to see nationwide?” Vance said.

“I mean, look, I think we have a fraud problem that is much worse in California than it is in Minnesota.”

Vance said discussions with federal officials revealed stark contrasts in the scale of fraud uncovered in different states, with California far outpacing Minnesota.

“I was talking actually to our Small Business Administrator,” Vance said.

“Think she’s found probably half a billion dollars of fraud in Minneapolis and the broader Minnesota area. Think she’s found $7 billion with a fraud in California.”

According to Vance, those figures show that Minnesota is not unique, but rather part of a much larger national issue involving fraud and abuse.

He said the numbers also expose what he described as the irrational nature of efforts by some local governments to block immigration enforcement.

“So this is, unfortunately, a problem that is much bigger than Minnesota,” Vance said, “but it’s also it highlights how absurd this effort to prevent the immigration enforcement is.”

Vance argued that opposition to immigration enforcement is not uniform across the country, even in Democratic-controlled areas.

He cited examples of cities and states where enforcement has not produced the same level of disruption.

“If you look at blue states, blue cities, you look at Memphis, Tennessee, not a Republican mayor, you look at Red states like Texas, but blue cities, like Austin, you do not see this level of chaos over the enforcement of immigration laws,” Vance said.

Instead, Vance said the unrest in Minneapolis is being driven by a relatively small number of activists who are actively working to obstruct federal law.

“What you have is a small band of very far left people who are doing everything that they can up to and including assaulting law enforcement officers and raiding churches,” Vance said.

Vance said those actions are part of a broader effort to vilify federal immigration agencies and undermine enforcement.

“To try to make ICE out to be the ultimate enemy and to kind of engage in this weird, small scale civil war against federal immigration law,” he said.

Vance described the situation as unnecessary and destabilizing, saying the resistance has compounded existing problems in Minneapolis rather than resolving them.

“It’s absurd,” Vance said.

“It’s added a lot of chaos here in Minneapolis.”

He said addressing that disorder is a key reason for his visit to the city, emphasizing that the federal government intends to enforce immigration laws and address fraud regardless of political resistance.

“And it’s one of the problems why I’m here to fix it,” Vance said.
