Freed Hostage Says Hamas Preferred One U.S. Candidate in 2024, Frequently Talked Politics [WATCH]

A former Israeli hostage held by Hamas revealed this week that members of the terror group expressed support for Kamala Harris to win the 2024 U.S. presidential election, as reported by The Independent Journal Review.

Omer Shem Tov, who was taken hostage during the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, spoke to CNN on Wednesday about his time in captivity. He said the group made their political views clear.

“They understood that he [Trump] wants to bring the hostages back home,” Shem Tov said, referencing the moment Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election.

Shem Tov’s comments came as he continues to raise awareness and advocate for the release of hostages still held in Gaza.

Before President Trump’s January inauguration, he had pushed for the release of all hostages taken by Hamas. Trump brokered an initial agreement in October 2023 aimed at facilitating the return of captives.

Harris, the former vice president and 2024 Democratic nominee, had reportedly urged then-President Joe Biden to adopt a more sympathetic stance toward Gaza and Palestinians months after the October 7 attacks.

As of March, according to the Associated Press, 59 hostages were believed to still be held by Hamas. Israeli officials said they believed at least 35 of those had died. President Trump stated on May 7 that 21 hostages remained in Hamas custody, including three confirmed dead.

Shem Tov has since met with President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alongside other freed hostages, including Keith Siegel.

Siegel also credited Trump with playing a major role in his release. “I am home because of his [Trump’s] efforts,” Siegel told CNN.

“I believe that he wants to do this, and it’s important to him. He has told us that. I ask him to do whatever he can and to do it as soon as possible to get an agreement secured and to get them all back.”

On May 7, Hamas said it would release its last American hostage, Edan Alexander. Trump reacted to the announcement on Truth Social, writing: “I am grateful to all those involved in making this monumental news happen.”

“This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones,” Trump added.

Shem Tov said he plans to dedicate his time to ensuring the safe return of all remaining hostages. “I will fight for my family,” he said. “They’re going through hell. And time is critical.”
