Fyre Festival 2, the planned sequel to the infamous 2017 failed music and arts festival in the Bahamas, has been postponed due to problems securing a location.
The first Fyre Fest saw visitors to the Bahamian island of Exuma promised a suite of luxury services, accommodations and high-profile visitors, with the event ultimately falling far short of lofty expectations, according to The Associated Press.
Organizer Billy McFarland, who is also organizing Fyre Festival 2, pleaded guilty to fraud charges and was sentenced to six years in prison in 2018 before being released in 2022.
Fyre Fest 2 was supposed to take place in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, between May 30 and June 2, with tickets going on sale in February, according to ABC News.
But tickets have now been refunded, and the sale of new tickets has been suspended.
“Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule,” organizers wrote in a message to current ticket holders, according to ABC News.
McFarland told NBC News, “FYRE Festival 2 is still on. We are vetting new locations and will announce our host destination soon. Our priorities remain unchanged: delivering an unforgettable, safe, and transparent experience.”
Playa del Carmen authorities said earlier this month that, regarding Fyre Fest 2, “no event of that name will be held in our city.”
Festival organizers responded on Instagram with a timeline of communication with the authorities there.
They also posted purported screenshots of emails they exchanged with Playa Del Carmen tourism authorities, pictures of official government documents regarding the festival and social media posts by Playa del Carmen officials mentioning the event.
“All media reports suggesting our team has not been working with the government of PDC are simply inaccurate and based on misinformation. FYRE has operated as a good partner with PDC government and has followed the proper processes and procedures to lawfully host an event,” Fyre Fest 2 organizers wrote in their Instagram caption.
