Gavin Newsom’s California Is a Crashing Caliphate of Chaos | The American Spectator

A terrible story out of Florida, on the opposite side of the country from where California governor Gavin Newsom busily plies his trade as one of America’s leading examples of political psychosis, nonetheless serves as a key data point for the collateral damage being done in the Golden State.

BREAKING: DHS & ICE confirm to @FoxNews that the illegal alien truck driver who killed 3 in a crash in Florida is an Indian national who initially crossed the California border illegally in September 2018 and was arrested by Border Patrol. Harjinder Singh was processed for expedited removal (fast track deportation) by the first Trump administration but claimed fear of going back to India. USCIS affirmed the fear via a positive finding of fear, and he was released on a $5,000 immigration bond in January 2019 after being given a Notice to Appear. He has remained in immigration proceedings ever since.

Singh was arrested by US Marshals in California on Saturday on a warrant for three counts of vehicular homicide in connection to the deadly crash in Florida. Photo of his arrest provided to FOX via federal source. Florida officials say the sanctuary state of California gave him a commercial driver’s license.

More DHS background on Singh to FOX:

“According to Singh, he has no serious physical or mental medical conditions. Singh claims to have no known immediate relatives serving in the U.S. military and is not the primary caretaker of a person with mental or physical disability, a minor or person with a serious illness. Singh claims to not be married and has no minor dependent children. Singh is not a victim of a domestic violence in the United States or human trafficking. After careful consideration of all factors and available records, Singh is considered a significant threat to public safety and is an exceptional circumstance warranting enforcement action due to the serious nature of his criminal history. ERO San Francisco is seeking HRO’s approval to place Singh in removal proceedings.”

Full DHS background on Singh:

On September 20, 2018, Singh entered the United States at or near San Ysidro, CA, without being inspected, admitted, or paroled by an immigration officer.

On September 20, 2018, US Border Patrol arrested Singh and was served with an I-860 and processed as an Expedited Removal with Credible Fear.

On December 26, 2018, United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) issued a positive fear finding and issued a Notice to Appear (NTA).

On January 10, 2019, an Immigration Judge (IJ) sets a bond, in the amount of $5,000.00.

On January 11, 2019, an obligor posts bond.

On July 29, 2020, the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) re-calendars hearing to April 5, 2021, at Seattle, Washington.

On September 3, 2024, an IJ grants Change of Venue (COV), from Seattle to San Francisco, California.

On August 16, 2025, ERO San Francisco placed an I-247A Immigration Detainer for Singh, with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, in French Camp, CA.

We don’t yet know exactly when Harjinder Singh obtained that CDL in California; it apparently was some time after he posted bond and was released into society in 2019.

California allows illegal aliens to get all kinds of professional licenses, it turns out. But don’t tell that to the state’s governor or they’ll become quite cross with you, as Homeland Security Secretary Kristie Noem found out…

Which would be fine, perhaps, except that Team Newsom wasn’t actually telling the truth.

And crawling into the Harjinder Singh rabbit hole yields lots of unpleasant goodies…

The video of the Florida wreck from the driver’s cab is bone-chilling, in that Singh doesn’t seem to have a care in the world as he makes an utterly insane illegal U-turn on an interstate highway, leading to an SUV carrying a driver and two passengers barreling into the side of his semi-trailer. Photos after the wreck show him to be amazingly composed, and perhaps remorseless, after causing the deaths of three people.

I’ve been hearing for months from people in the trucking industry about illegal aliens proliferating on the roads carrying freight with zero professional qualifications or appreciable skills, making the highways far less safe. That Singh’s CDL came from California would track perfectly with those complaints — it’s Newsom’s California, so I’m told, which has been the source of the unsafe illegal truck drivers fanning out across the country.

Remember — a very large percentage of the freight loads traveling on our highways originate at California ports like Long Beach. So when that state gives CDLs to unqualified truckers and California trucking companies hire them, it’s a rapidly spreading cancer that infects the whole industry. This gets reflected in commercial auto insurance rates across America, among other things.

So when Singh killed those people over the weekend, it became just another data point in this ugly story.

Newsom is becoming — that isn’t right; he has been for some time — the Typhoid Mary of awful public policy, creating misery for ordinary folks. And we see that again and again in California itself.

The response to the Pacific Palisades fire is a spot-on example. Poor forest management in the hills above that community, going back decades, but perhaps intensifying on Newsom’s watch, when it was more and more easily obvious that clearing underbrush and creating fire breaks to shield populated areas from wildfires, led to those people being burned out of their homes. That was certainly bad enough. (RELATED: Wildfires As a Wake-Up Call)

But eight months on, the residents of Pacific Palisades — who have wealth and insurance checks, and aren’t generally in need of public assistance to rebuild — have barely even begun to reconstruct what they’ve lost. Why? Bureaucracy. State and local governments in California are slow-walking the permitting process for people to begin not new construction but replacement construction on their property. (RELATED: Environmentalists or Exclusionists?)

That’s happening at the same time it’s been revealed that a $100 million charity campaign to help Pacific Palisades did absolutely nothing of the sort, with the money going to a roster of leftist non-profits. And after Newsom and Los Angeles’s Castroite mayor Karen Bass floated a trial balloon of a plan to spend another $100 million building “affordable housing” in that pricey community.

There goes the neighborhood. Multiple times. It’s as though Newsom is getting Harinjer Singh to drive over the wreckage and the people of Pacific Palisades in his truck again and again.

But like cancer cells escaping from a growth, California’s dysfunction isn’t just apparent on the roadways, and it isn’t just felt indirectly. It’s in your face. There was, of course, Newsom’s declaration that his state will attempt to further gerrymander its congressional map — because 43 of 52 seats being Democrat isn’t enough. And somehow this isn’t his fault but Texas’s… (RELATED: Will Newsom Rig His Redistricting Referendum?)

Polling indicates this stupid idea is an abject loser with the voters of California, who would have to sign off on Newsom’s emergency gerrymandering. It’s on the wrong side of a 64-36 result.

What we already know, of course, is how Newsom wants this to end.

He wants to take California’s misery national using the White House as his conduit, and the prediction markets seem to think the latest round of antics is making that more likely.

I’m not sure that last data point represents anything other than that Newsom is getting more attention than other Democrat hopefuls for 2028. And I’m also not sure — in fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the opposite — that attracting attention is a good idea for him.

The more people see him, the more turned off they tend to be. And Team Newsom isn’t very self-aware about that.

This isn’t really a flex, you know.

We’ll find out as time goes by, but I’m fairly confident that an America that suffered enough under four years of malignant disdain at the hands of the Corporate Joe Biden will run screaming from the prospect of having Gavin Newsom in charge of our future.

But that sure won’t stop him from trying to inflict his brand of misery on us. And as that terrible crash in Florida showed, Newsom is already more than capable of causing chaos everywhere in America.
