Podcaster and radio host Charlamagne tha God delivered a blunt assessment of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s prospects for the presidency during a live on-air exchange, saying the Democrat “doesn’t stand a fucking chance.”
The remark came just hours after Newsom appeared in a video addressing a black audience where he said, “I’m like you,” and referenced scoring a 960 on his SAT while adding that he “can’t read” his own speeches, according to previous reporting.

Charlamagne’s criticism of Newsom is not new.
The radio host has repeatedly questioned the governor’s political approach and messaging, including his efforts to position California in opposition to President Donald Trump following Trump’s election victory.
In 2024, Charlamagne took issue with Newsom’s use of the phrase “Trump-proof” to describe California’s policies in the weeks after President Trump’s win. He argued that such language could backfire politically.

Charlamagne said using words “like ‘Trump-proof’” will result in a person “looking like a hypocrite when, you know, you need the president for something, and you all in his face, smiling and cheesing the same way, you know, President Biden was, after they called him ‘a threat to democracy’ and all of these other things.”
He added that political disagreements should focus on policy rather than personal attacks.
“If there’s policies that you don’t like that Trump may enact, make it about that. Don’t make it about the person,” Charlamagne said in comments highlighted by Mediaite.
The recent on-air exchange in which Charlamagne dismissed Newsom’s White House ambitions marked one of his most direct statements on the governor’s national prospects.
His comment that Newsom “doesn’t stand a f**king chance” came as speculation continues about potential Democratic contenders in upcoming election cycles.
Charlamagne has also criticized other leading Democrats as the party navigates internal questions about leadership and direction.
During a recent appearance on The Daily Show, he mocked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Governor Newsom, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries while questioning who would ultimately lead the Democratic Party.
The comments reflect an ongoing pattern of skepticism from Charlamagne toward high-profile Democratic figures, particularly when it comes to messaging and strategy. His critiques often center on what he views as political inconsistency or ineffective positioning.
Newsom, who has frequently been mentioned as a potential future presidential candidate, has continued to maintain a national profile through media appearances and policy initiatives in California.
However, Charlamagne’s remarks suggest that not all commentators aligned with or sympathetic to Democratic politics are convinced of the governor’s viability on a national stage.
The exchange adds to broader discussions within Democratic circles about leadership, messaging, and electoral strategy heading into future election cycles.
For now, Charlamagne’s on-air statement stands as a sharp rebuke of Newsom’s presidential aspirations, delivered in language that left little room for ambiguity.
