Following President Donald Trump’s remarks on peace in the Middle East, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joked with the president that he had given him an “upgraded” title.
On Wednesday, Trump secured a historic peace deal between Israel and Hamas, just a day after the war’s second anniversary. After delivering his speech about the agreement, Trump thanked the crowd as Carney approached to shake his hand. “I’m glad you upgraded me to president,” Carney was heard joking.
“Oh, did I say [that]?” Trump asked as Carney laughed.

Hamas announced last week — prior to the second anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war — that it would tentatively agree to release all remaining hostages and relinquish power under Trump’s proposed ceasefire agreement.
By Thursday Israel’s cabinet approved the first phase of the deal, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posting on X that members approved the “framework” to help secure the release of hostages, both dead and alive.
Hamas released the remaining living Israeli hostages on Monday as part of the peace deal agreed upon between the two. Videos online have circulated showing survivors meeting with their families after being abducted on Oct. 7, 2023.
During Trump’s speech on Monday, the president praised the brokered peace between Hamas and Israel, signing the historic deal in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt with dozens of world leaders by his side.
“At long last, we have peace in the Middle East, and it’s a very simple expression, ‘Peace in the Middle East,’” Trump said. “We’ve heard it for many years, but nobody thought it could ever get there. And now we’re there.”
With the first phase of releasing hostages completed, Trump’s 20-point peace plan is expected to see Hamas disarmed. Reports, however, indicate that Hamas remains defiant, with Fox News reporting its officials saying that disarming is “out of the question.”
