“But I appreciate it very much. I appreciate it. Maybe we’re going to have to go a little bit quicker than this because we have a whole schedule,” Trump said. “If I could just say it’s, you know, your name and your country would be great. Thank you, please.”
During the same meeting, Trump promised West African leaders a shift from aid to trade, as the region grapples with the effects of significant U.S. aid cuts, according to The Associated Press. The president highlighted the “great economic potential” he sees in Africa, urging a focus on mutually beneficial partnerships rather than traditional aid. Leaders from Liberia, Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau pointed out their countries’ natural resources and expressed gratitude for Trump’s role in resolving a longstanding conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Trump described these nations as “vibrant places” rich in minerals, oil, and human potential.
The meeting took place amid broader shifts in U.S. foreign policy. Trump’s administration recently dismantled the United States Agency for International Development. Additionally, Trump has also been working to resolve the conflict between Hamas and Israel, with efforts focused on securing a lasting peace agreement that addresses hostages and also disarmament.
