Google entered a $45 million advertising contract with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office in late June to promote government messages about Gaza, according to government documents obtained by Drop Site News.
The six-month campaign uses YouTube and Google’s Display & Video 360 platform to distribute videos denying famine in Gaza, according to the report. One Foreign Ministry video declaring, “There is food in Gaza. Any other claim is a lie,” garnered over 6 million views, largely through paid promotion. Government contracts describe the campaign as “hasbara,” a Hebrew term for public relations or propaganda, according to Drop Site News.
The advertising push began hours after Israel announced humanitarian supplies to Gaza were blocked on March 2. During a Knesset hearing that day, IDF spokesperson Avichai Edrei told lawmakers authorities could “launch a digital campaign in this context, to explain that there is no hunger and present the data.”
