Government’s Own Website Contradicts Phillipson Teacher Hiring Spin
Labour’s manifesto promised the party “will recruit an additional 6,500 new expert teachers.” Despite what Phillipson says that’s not going well…
Last week the DfE promoted its hiring “2,346 more teachers in secondary and special schools compared to last year.” Missing something there?
The actual breakdown of figures for 2024 has been published recently by the government:
- State-funded nursery and primary schools saw a decrease (2,900, -1.3%).
- Increases in Secondary (1,400, 0.7%).
- Increases Special and Pupil Referral Units (900, 3.2%).

As Guido pointed out on nurseries – Reeves’ budget tax hikes are closing more than Phillipson is claiming to be able to open. The expectation now is that Labour will attempt to alter the definition of a teacher for the purposes of its manifesto pledge. Seeing as they’re going backwards…
