The White House sarcastically celebrated the news that Rosie O’Donnell, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, is applying for Irish citizenship.
O’Donnell explained that she is living in “self-imposed (political exile)” after she decided to move to Ireland amid her ongoing feud with the President of the United States. She moved to the country in January, five days before Trump’s second term in the Oval Office.
“I am applying and about to be approved for my Irish citizenship as my grandparents were from there and that’s all you need,” she said to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph. “It will be good to have my Irish citizenship, especially since Trump keeps threatening to take away mine.”
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson had a very positive reaction to share with Fox News Digital.
“What great news for America!” she said.
In July, the president took to Truth Social to announce that he was considering “taking away” O’Donnell’s citizenship, calling her a “Threat to Humanity” who should remain in Ireland.
“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship. She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump wrote.
In response, the comedian mocked Trump, saying he “has always hated the fact that I see him for who he is,” and labeling him “a criminal con man, sexual abusing liar out to harm our nation to serve himself.”
It didn’t take long for the president to double down on his threat, saying the revocation deserves “serious thought” because “She is not a Great American and is, in my opinion, incapable of being so!”
And again, O’Donnell lashed out at Trump.
“He can’t do that because it’s against the Constitution, and even the Supreme Court has not given him the right to do that … he’s not allowed to do that, the only way you’re allowed to take away someone’s citizenship is if they renounce it themselves, and I will never renounce my American citizenship. I am a very proud citizen of the United States,” she wrote on her Substack account.
“I am also getting my citizenship here so I can have dual citizenship in Ireland and the United States because I enjoy living here. It’s very peaceful. I love the politics of the country. I love the people and their generous hearts and spirit. And it’s been very good for my daughter. But I still want to maintain my citizenship in the United States. My children are there. I will be there visiting and go to see them. And I have the freedom to do that, as does every American citizen.”
It remains to be seen whether Trump will officially revoke O’Donnell’s citizenship or whether he will simply let her hide away in Ireland for the duration of his presidency.
