Greta Thunberg And Actor Liam Cunningham Head For Gaza Strip

Climate activist Greta Thunberg and approximately 20 boats departed Barcelona Sunday in an attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, challenging Israel’s naval blockade of the Palestinian territory, CBS News reported.

The Global Sumud Flotilla carries food, water, and medicine for Gaza residents facing what food experts declared a famine in Gaza City earlier this month, according to CBS news. The convoy includes delegations from 44 countries, with additional vessels planning to join from Italian, Greek, and Tunisian ports.

“The story here is about Palestine,” Thunberg said at a Barcelona press conference. “The story here is how people are being deliberately deprived of the very basic means to survive.”

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 63,000 deaths since the war began nearly two years ago. Malnutrition has claimed 332 Palestinian lives, among them 124 children, the outlet reported. Food experts say that 500,000 Gaza residents now confront catastrophic hunger.

Actor Liam Cunningham, joining the flotilla, showed reporters a video of a Palestinian girl named Fatima singing while planning her funeral. “What sort of world have we slid into where children are making their own funeral arrangements?” Cunningham asked reporters.

The military stopped Thunberg’s ship in June and detained 21 international activists in July, seizing cargo, including baby formula and medicine, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. (RELATED: Greta Thunberg Weighs In On The Israel-Hamas War)

An Israeli official said Saturday the country will soon halt or slow humanitarian aid into northern Gaza areas as military operations against Hamas expand.

The war began Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists killed 1,200 people inside Israel and took 251 hostages.
