Tunisian authorities are challenging claims that Greta Thunberg’s activist flotilla was bombed by a drone.
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) Family boat, aimed at getting supplies into Gaza, was allegedly “struck by a drone,” according to fellow activist Yasemin Acar. Footage of the alleged bombing is circulating on social media, prompting conversation about just what happened to the vessel as it was moored at Tunisia’s Port of Sidi Bou Said. Everyone on board was evacuated, and the fire was eventually extinguished, according to Acar.

But Tunisian authorities are rejecting that version of events.
“An AFP journalist on site reported that a fire broke out on board but was quickly extinguished. Tunisian national guard spokesman Houcem Eddine Jebabli said investigators found ‘no drones have been detected,’ and preliminary findings suggested the blaze began in the boat’s life jackets, possibly from a cigarette,” reads a report from Jewish News Syndicate (JNS). “The national guard described reports of a drone strike as ‘completely unfounded.’”
The GSF is launching an investigation of its own into the alleged attack.
“The boat was under the Portuguese flag, and all passengers and crew are safe. An investigation is currently underway, and when more information is available, it will be released immediately. Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating and derailing our mission will not deter us. Our peaceful mission to break the siege on Gaza and stand in solidarity with its people continues with determination and resolve,” a statement from the group reads.
It didn’t take long for Israel to be accused of having involvement, either, according to a Reuters report.
“We do not know who carried out the attack, but we would not be surprised if it was Israel. If confirmed, it is an attack against Tunisian sovereignty,” said United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, who was allegedly at the port at the time of the fire.
It’s worth noting that the boat reportedly “only incurred minor damage,” according to a report by The Daily Mail, which seems awfully suspicious if Israel were trying to blow it up and destroy the resources onboard.
