Gunman kills four people, wounds 10 others in shooting at California child’s birthday party

Authorities in Northern California said Sunday that three children were among the four people killed during a gunman’s rampage through a child’s birthday party the night before in Stockton.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said the ages of the three children killed were 8, 9 and 14. A 21-year-old adult victim also died in the Saturday evening shooting that left 10 others with gunshot wounds.

An area hospital said it is treating a 9-year-old and two adults injured by gunfire.

“Two adult patients are currently being cared for at our hospital. One has minor injuries and a second patient is undergoing surgery. A 9-year-old pediatric patient also arrived at the emergency room and is in fair condition,” a spokesperson for Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center told KGO-TV.

Officials said a birthday party was being held inside a banquet hall when shots rang out around 6 p.m. Saturday.

“Early indications suggest this may have been a targeted incident,” Heather Brent, the sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said at a press briefing Saturday night. “This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and information remains limited.”

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi offered her condolences to the slain victims in her remarks at the same briefing.

“Heaven is a little bigger with the individuals, children and adults, that unfortunately did not make it,” the mayor said.

Police have not made any arrests so far. No information on the suspected shooter has been released about the suspected shooter.
