Defence Secretary John Healey has refused to rule out £2.6 billion of defence cuts in the Commons this afternoon. He was given three opportunities to do so…
Last week The Telegraph reported the MoD is scrambling to find £2 billion of cuts to avoid blowing its budget, with some military leaders already looking to scale back training to save money. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge said:
“Labour were asked three times if they are making £2.6bn of cuts this year to our Armed Forces – and three times they failed to deny it. This is the truth about Labour’s rhetoric on defence – it’s all smoke and mirrors. The reality is Labour are prioritising penny-pinching whilst starving the frontlines of cash. We need to know urgently where these damaging frontline cuts are going to land.”
Labour also committed to completing and publishing the Defence Investment Plan in the autumn. Healey refused to keep that promise today. “Battle-ready Britain“…
