Hillary Clinton Claims Democracy Now ‘Under Siege’ In US

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that democracy is “under siege” in the United States.

Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), Clinton discussed what she said was the event’s positive momentum but quickly pivoted to a darker view of the global political climate. While calling the panels and working groups “incredibly encouraging,” she pointed to what she described as a global crisis, one in which autocracies now outnumber democracies for the first time in two decades.

“I’m certainly inspired to be back at CGI and all the reports that I’m getting about the working groups, the panels, the leaders’ events, all of it is incredibly encouraging. But we also arrive here with urgent fears about democracy worldwide,” Clinton said. “This is not just an American story because, around the world, autocracies now outnumber democracies for the first time in 20 years. Nearly three-quarters of the world’s population today lives under autocratic regimes. In too many countries, including sadly right here in the United States, democracy is under siege.”

Clinton said the phrase “democratic backsliding” no longer captures the urgency of the moment.

“The polite phrase for this is democratic backsliding. But that’s a euphemism that doesn’t meet the moment. Let’s call it what it is. It’s a power grab. The rule of law isn’t slipping. Leaders are sabotaging it. Rights aren’t being neglected,” Clinton added. “They’re being stripped. And let’s be clear. No knight in shining armor is coming to save democracy. It’s on all of us to save our countries and our rights. Civil society, philanthropic activists, communities of faith, companies, citizens all, we have to lead the way.”

In 2019, Hillary Clinton called President Donald Trump an “illegitimate president” and suggested the election was “stolen,” comments that critics argue contributed to public distrust in the electoral system. Clinton’s campaign also helped fund the Steele dossier, which became a key part of the Russiagate investigation, which Special Counsel John Durham criticized in a 2023 report. Durham concluded that the FBI relied too heavily on unverified opposition research tied to Clinton’s campaign, raising concerns about the politicization of federal law enforcement.
