House Dem suffering from ‘early stages of dementia’ targeted by scammers: police

In the latest argument for congressional term limits, dementia-addled Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton was scammed out of more than $4,000 by swindlers who claimed that they were HVAC workers.

The 88-year-old Holmes Norton is a non-voting delegate who represents Washington, D.C., and despite her advanced age and cognitive decline, has said that she plans to run again in 2026, even though many would argue she belongs in a nursing home and not the U.S. Capitol.

NBC News4 Washington obtained an internal police report detailing the scam in which the near-nonagenarian was duped by con artists who showed up at her home on 9th Street SE pretending to be there to perform duct and fireplace cleaning, charging her credit card for $4,362 without doing the work.

In the report, police described Norton as being in the “early stages of dementia,” and having a caretaker who has power of attorney, although according to the outlet, her office “pushed back against that claim.”

The befuddled delegate let multiple people into her home, and according to the report,  the “caretaker/power of attorney was not at residence,” according to the report, which did not name the person but said they were the one who called the cops.

“That individual saw the HVAC workers on a security camera and advised Norton to tell them to leave, the report says. That person then went to Norton’s home and realized the credit card had been charged,” News4 reported. “They then flagged down a D.C. police officer, and U.S. Capitol Police also went to Norton’s home to investigate.”

According to the report, Norton’s credit card and credit card and driver’s license number  “could potentially be compromised.”  The incident took place on Thursday and is being treated as felony fraud. No arrests have been made.

“The Congresswoman employs a house manager who oversees all maintenance services, so she initially assumed her staff had arranged the visit and provided her credit card for payment,” Norton’s office said.

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) 88 years old, Black Woman, suffers early stages of dementia,” the police report states.

“The medical diagnosis included in the police report was based on an assumption the reporting officer was unqualified to make,” Norton’s office said in a statement.

The elderly delegate is currently the oldest member of the House of Representatives and has been firmly ensconced in her seat since 1991, with no apparent intention to surrender it anytime soon.

Last month, the decrepit Democrat needed help stepping away from the podium after an anti-Trump rant about the deployment of the National Guard to clean up the District’s violent crime problem.

Norton recently told Axios that she isn’t considering retirement despite questions about her cognitive capabilities.

“Of course,” she said when asked if she’s running again. “I say that my seniority is what is very important, and I am not going to step aside.”
