How politics is helping our enemies kill us with fentanyl

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

The opioid crisis and fentanyl epidemic in America have reached catastrophic levels. With over 100,000 overdose deaths annually—most linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl—the need for effective harm reduction has never been greater. Yet, in this fight to save lives, politics have begun to poison progress. Many Democrats and left-leaning harm reduction organizations continue to favor ineffective testing solutions from Canadian and China-based companies like BTNX (Rapid Response) and DanceSafe, while ignoring the vastly superior, American-made A47 testing line from The Fentanyl Test. This refusal, rooted in political bias rather than science or outcomes, is not only misguided—it’s deadly.

Let’s be clear: saving lives should transcend party lines. It should be about science, results, and usability, not who supports Trump or Biden. However, prominent organizations, along with various state-run and city-based harm reduction initiatives, continue to reject The Fentanyl Test’s groundbreaking A47 products, even when offered at lower prices than inferior alternatives. Why? Because The Fentanyl Test has publicly supported Trump’s border security efforts and tariffs initiatives proven to reduce the inflow of Chinese and Mexican synthetic opioids and analogs.

This epidemic is not just a public health emergency—it is a war being waged against the American people by foreign entities. Chinese chemical manufacturers and Mexican cartels are flooding the U.S. with fentanyl, xylazine, nitazenes, and benzodiazepines. These compounds are deliberately engineered and distributed to destabilize, addict, and ultimately destroy. And the tragedy is, they are winning—not because we lack the tools to fight back, but because America is too politically divided to unite around solutions that work. Harm reduction is being paralyzed by partisanship, and lives are the cost.

Canadian and Chinese-based BTNX and DanceSafe test strips are the most widely used in the U.S. Both require full dilution of a substance before testing, making them impractical and often unused in real-world settings. People who use drugs—especially those using intravenously—are reluctant to dissolve and destroy their entire dose just to test it. These dilution-based methods also suffer from high cutoff levels, failing to detect small but lethal amounts of fentanyl or other toxic analogs. The outcome is predictable and devastating: the user, falsely assured by an inaccurate test, injects a toxic cocktail directly into their veins.

In stark contrast, The Fentanyl Test’s A47 line is the first and only in the world to require no dilution. Its process is as simple as it is revolutionary. The user takes the test strip and gently touches it across the entire sample, ensuring all portions are covered and avoiding the deadly “chocolate chip cookie effect” (where only part of the substance is contaminated). Then, just three drops of The Fentanyl Test’s proprietary buffer liquid are applied directly to the strip itself. That’s it. No water, no mixing, no destruction of the substance—leaving it 100% intact and unaltered. This makes it the only harm reduction test that drug users will consistently and confidently use, yet to decision makers, political beliefs are more important than people being poisoned.

Not only is the A47 method easier and safer, it’s also unmatched in accuracy and scope. The Fentanyl Test’s A47 line detects fentanyl down to 1 ng/mL—far below the thresholds of all major competitors. It’s also the only 4-in-1 test strip in the world that detects Fentanyl, Nitazenes, Xylazine, and Benzodiazepines on one single strip, with no dilution required.

That’s critical. According to U.S. law enforcement and the DEA, nearly half of all fentanyl seized today contains Xylazine, a veterinary sedative that renders naloxone (Narcan) useless. Benzodiazepines, often mixed in as well, also neutralize naloxone’s effectiveness. These aren’t accidental combinations; they are chemical time bombs designed for one purpose: to kill Americans.

The Fentanyl Test is also one of the only products that can be used on any surface or medium, including pills, powders, liquids, and even drinks. Its flexibility and ease of use make it a vital harm reduction and public safety tool, not just for users, but for law enforcement, parents, schools, and communities.

And yet, despite its superiority, many U.S. harm reduction organizations continue to blacklist The Fentanyl Test. Not because of performance. Not because of price. But because its founders have spoken in favor of securing our border and cracking down on foreign trafficking routes, the views are labeled as “conservative.” This kind of ideological gatekeeping in harm reduction is not only unethical—it’s costing lives.

This is a call to action. To all harm reduction professionals, public health leaders, and addiction services providers: the fentanyl epidemic does not care who you voted for. It does not care whether your politics lean left, right, or center. This is chemical warfare being launched against our families and neighbors, and the enemy is succeeding because we are too divided to fight it together.

Saving lives must come first. Full stop. We have the tools. We have the data. We have a test that’s more accurate, more accessible, and more effective than anything else on the market. It’s time to put politics aside and deploy the very best we have unless you’re ready to admit you do not care about saving lives.

Let’s stop the war that’s killing us. Let’s save lives. Together. Let’s unite—not as Democrats or Republicans—but as Americans.
